Fouke, Arkansas is located in the southwest corner of Arkansas, approximately 15 miles south of Texarkana, USA, on Highway 71. It is a small town, approximate population 864, and it's biggest claim to fame is the story of the Fouke Monster, the making of the movie "The Legend of Boggy Creek", and the home of J. E. "Smokey" Crabtree. In the late 60's and early 70"s the country around Fouke was more heavily wooded than it is today and there was a lot of activity from the creature. Today the land has been clear cut in a lot of areas, cutting down on secluded places in which the creature can roam. But there are still sightings of the creature from time to time and even if a person never gets to see the creature there is still a lot of beautiful, wild country to enjoy.
The area in which Fouke is located is known as the four states area because this area is where the state lines of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas all join. The Sulpher River crosses Highway 71 about 4 to 5 miles south of Fouke and it is 15 miles from Fouke to the Louisiana state line. The Sulpher River bottoms is still a deeply wooded area of the country. Mercer Bayou and Boggy Creek is a part of this area that is very beautiful and are very interesting streams of water to travel on. There are alligators, birds of all kinds, fish, turtles, and of course, snakes that are the denizens of the bottoms. Wildflowers and cypress trees abound in the secluded backwoods of this area. Check out the souvenir page for postcards of some of these scenes.
All the pictures on this page, with the exception of me in the boat were taken by me, Smokey Crabtree. If you would like to view some other pictures of the area please visit my site, "Too Close To The Mirror".
